About us

Rooted in care.
Growing together.

A small community with a long Brooklyn story—and a shared belief that children flourish through connection, individuality, and play.

Our Brooklyn story

One shared idea.
Decades of connection.

Roots and Wings began when families came together to create the kind of childcare community they wanted for their children.

From our first community in 1982 to our Park Slope home, explore the moments that shaped our story.

A community begins

Three sisters and a group of parents founded Roots and Wings, seeking quality, full-day care for their young children. Parents managed the program’s administrative responsibilities.

A Park Slope home

After operating in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park/Bay Ridge area, the program moved to Park Slope, carrying its community-centered spirit into a new neighborhood.

A new chapter

In late 2004, the program incorporated as the nonprofit organization Roots and Wings Kids, Inc.

Our philosophy

Every child brings
something wonderful.

Respect, meaningful relationships, and learning through play shape our approach to early childhood.

A place to belong

Warmth, respect, and reassuring relationships help children feel secure as they find their place in the group.

Room to be yourself

We value individual personalities, cultural differences, and the many shapes a family can take.

Learning through play

Child-centered play creates opportunities for cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth.

Curiosity through the senses

Sensory exploration invites children to investigate materials, share discoveries, and express ideas.

Imagination in motion

Open-ended play, art, and storytelling leave space for a child’s own ideas to lead the way.

Growing through movement

Fine and gross motor experiences, outdoor exploration, music, and movement are part of our approach.

Families as partners

Ongoing communication connects the child’s experience at home with their time in our community.

The meaning of Roots & Wings

A steady foundation.
An open horizon.

Roots are the reassuring feeling of being known: a familiar place, caring relationships, and a community that welcomes who you are.

Wings are the confidence that grows from that foundation: trying something new, sharing an idea, making a friend, and taking the next small step toward independence.

Our hope is to offer both—a place to return to, and encouragement to explore.

At the heart of our community

Meet Ms. Sandy Roses

Daycare Director & On-Site Provider

For decades, Ms. Sandy Roses has been an integral part of the Roots and Wings community. As Daycare Director and On-Site Provider, she draws on her background as a Cuban immigrant and brings dedication, experience, and a personal commitment to the program’s daily life.

Sandy plays a central role in day-to-day operations and management, helping shape a welcoming environment where children’s individual personalities are valued. Her work connects the practical details of running the daycare with the relationships that make it a community: getting to know families, guiding the program, and keeping its caring, respectful philosophy at the center of each day.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Spanish from Baruch University. Her longstanding involvement with Roots and Wings has also included service on its Board of Directors.

Her leadership reflects the values that have guided Roots and Wings since its beginnings: compassion, individuality, and connection. Alongside the team and families, Sandy helps give children a place to belong and encouragement to explore.
